New Moon in Cancer: A Ritual to Embody a New Timeline

The Cancer New Moon (From the Newsletter)
As the sun moved into Cancer, I also noticed a good deal of astrologers mention their frustration at seeing the usual “Sun is in Cancer and I’m crying” types of posts. This is one of the most common stereotypes associated with the sign of Cancer, right up there with Leo being vain. As someone with a few important points/placements in Cancer that oppose a stellium in Capricorn, it is a sign I’ve learned to love and learned to recognize within myself. But the journey wasn’t easy. For a good while in my early studies, I tried to deny that I had such a strong Cancer house.
Water signs get associated with being emotional, and as a Cardinal sign, Cancer is especially linked with this idea. But what does a Cardinal Water sign actually connect to? What does it truly represent in terms of archetypes and ideas within us? Let’s just explore the imagery of water: shapeless, formless, able to move between spaces, to be absorbed by the earth, to put out fires, to fill a vessel, to drown and to nourish. Water is a fierce force— an element closely linked with movement and emmeshment. As a Cardinal water sign, Cancer seeks to embody all of these energies at once. Cancer wants to crash and overwhelm. Cancer wants to soothe and nourish. Cancer wants to blend between self and another essence. People call this sign a crybaby but in truth, it’s a sign that isn’t afraid to give itself completely. It’s a sign that wants nothing more than to truly feel by becoming one with what it touches just before it takes control and redirects. Like Pisces, Cancer does want to blur the lines, but Cancer seeks to initiate all of this. Cancer seeks to push beyond the limits and create something new.
With the new moon in Cancer, I invite you to explore your understanding of vulnerability. Do you allow vulnerability to make you soft, soft in a way that can consume the world? Soft in the kind of way that can move between various forms, blending with all it embodies? What does vulnerable strength mean to you? What does flow look like? With the Sun and Moon meet at the early stages of Cancer, you’re still in an early exploration stage of this journey, whether you’ve moved through this before and are beginning anew, or if this is your first time exploring your own vulnerabilities. If you too have considered Cancer the crybaby of the zodiac, ask you why this might be. Ask yourself whether “crybaby” is actually code for letting one be overcome.

One of the things that I’m most excited to chat about, in regards to aspects, is the exact (the degree) square from the new moon to Jupiter in Aries at 7°. Cardinal squares are a doozy at times. Cardinality implies action whether expressive or internal, but in this case, we have a square between Jupiter in an intuitive and fired-up sign and the new moon in a sign eager to shift its form.
Building on what I mentioned about vulnerability, this new moon isn’t just about considering your relationship to vulnerability but rather, about taking action. Imagine this: The new moon is a wave moving towards the shore, you are on a sandy beach, near a fire beginning to slow, its light slowly fading. The moon sits near the horizon. Off in the distance, you see another flame, small candlelight flickering against the winds. Someone sits near this candle, looking out at the same moon you see. Jupiter is this candle. You are both engaged in ritual or meditation. You have the option to ignore this person, to sit and want connection but choose not to embrace it. You also have the option to go over (maybe they seem approachable) and chat about your ritual. That is the tension of the square. There is no opportunity to do nothing. You either CHOOSE to approach the person or CHOOSE to wonder about what would have happened if you had.
As we move towards the new moon, you’ll feel this inspiration to be decisive. Some of you might be drawn to action and others to inaction— either way, you’ll feel the need to stand your ground and make a choice for yourself before the world makes it for you.
Finally, to aid us in this decision-making, we have Venus in Gemini making a sextile to Jupiter. Venus’ role in this lunation is that of making an effort to access new parts of yourself. As you make decisions for how you’ll move forward in the next six months, Venus lends her desire for MORE to your decisions. But she’s pushing you a bit too, not towards ease but towards a soft challenge. Venus wants you to embody becoming more than being, in this sign, and in this lunation. So who are you becoming?
A tarot spread with five cards and four surrounding one.
The Ritual
Supplies Needed
A song that has a strong vibe of empowerment or strength. Or a song that means a good deal to you.
A glass of water.
An empty glass.
A tarot card or image that represents an archetype you want to embody in the next six months.
An intention of who you are becoming over the next six months— written or memorized.
1️⃣ — Step One: Tarot Spread and Journaling Prompts
Use the tarot spread pictured above to get guidance on the ritual from your spirit court. Use the journaling prompts below to help you craft an intention.
(one) Where in my life have I avoided being the deciding force?
(two) What is stopping me from listening to my own inner guidance?
(three) What decision feels most aligned to my desired future?
(four) What energy should I embody as I move towards becoming?
(five) How will this ritual aid me in the next six months?
Journaling Prompts
What does vulnerability look like to me? What is the connotation I hold with this word?
In what ways am I avoiding being vulnerable and why?
What does a more vulnerable version of me look like?
Where do I want to be in the next six months and how is vulnerability connected to this becoming?
A glass of water with ice cubes splashing into it on a reflective surface.
2️⃣ Set your scene
Put on the song, on repeat, sing the lyrics and allow yourself to feel into the energy of it. Light a candle or add some incense if you’d like to. Call on your spirits and the magic around you. Feel into the connection you have into future you. Who are they? What do they feel like?
3️⃣ State your intention
Begin by grabbing a glass with water and an empty glass. Place the two glasses next to each other with the archetype or tarot card in between the two if you choose to use one. Hold the glass with water in your left hand.
State “This glass represents who I am, where I am at, all of the energy I currently hold in this timeline. I am this water.”
Then hold the empty glass in right hand. Hold it up and state “This glass represents the timeline where I most wish to be where “… (insert intention or ideas of where you’d like to be within the next six months.”
4️⃣ Fill Your Glass
Slowly begin to pour the water from the full glass into the empty glass. As you do this, focus on envision yourself stepping into the timeline where you most want to be. State “I shifting into the timeline where I most want to be.” Hold the image of that future in your hand as you fill the glass.
5️⃣ Embodiment
Once your glass is full, set down the now empty glass. Focusing on the card and your future, settle for a moment and FEEL into that new future. Once you are ready, drink the water and state “I am now in the timeline I most wish to be in.”
As you move forward into the next six months, consider the card you selected. Focus on embodying that energy. Consider who you are in this new timeline and make decisions from that place. Release expectations.
