New Moon in Aquarius: A Ritual for Rebellion

A person with gold paint over their entire body.

Aquarius New Moon

Surprisingly, this new moon is actually one that’s a bit calmer and forward-focused than many that we’ve had. There aren’t too many aspects, and we actually have Venus now stationed direct.

This new moon is the outspoken rebellious best friend, the one who pushes you to wear the short skirt when you're nervous but want to, the best friend who says “BABY, YOU DESERVE THE WORLD," or “Have the confidence of a mediocre white man and GO FOR IT.”

This new moon is encouraging you to step out of your comfort zone. If there was one whispered affirmation to gain from this new moon, it would be “Do what’s least expected of you and surprise yourself.” This new moon is about trusting that you have the resources you need to make shit happen.

With the ruler of the new moon also so close to the lunation (within 3°) you may find that there is a chance to gain wisdom and lessons that will affect you long-term. Check the house that Aquarius falls in for more information on where you can learn to evolve. The only active bodies and aspects in this new moon are Chiron, Saturn, and Uranus all within “feelable” degrees. These aspects have influenced my Ritual for Rebellion below.

This Aquarius new moon will initiate a cycle for the next six months of evaluating our values, inspecting the systems we have in place, and considering what wisdom we still wish to gain— or where we wish to expand our minds. As you move through this lunation, and the rest of Aquarius season, ask yourself where in your mind you're holding yourself back by focusing on HOW you have always done things. This new moon will especially guide us to seek new ways of thinking and to be more forward-thinking.

Look to the journaling prompts below if you wish to explore these themes more intimately.

When it comes to the aspects, what I find most interesting is not necessarily Saturn so close but rather the sextile made to Uranus. This is the aspect that inspired the ritual below. With Uranus making a close sextile aspect to the lunation, there’s a push and a desire to revitalize our lives. Uranus is lending us its energy of rebellion and anarchy, pushing us to make counter-intuitive choices that propel us towards a new future. Sextiles are tricky aspects at times. They are generally ones of ease because of the matching polarity of the signs with the planets involved, but unlike trines which have a matching element, sextiles require a little bit of work. They ask us to approach what we’re moving towards with new energy, a new method, a unique view. As you move towards this lunation, ask yourself where you need to make a change and where you need to see things from a different POV.

Aside from Uranus, we clearly have a close conjunction from Saturn who is in his domicile here. Saturn’s close conjunction brings a gift of time, a focus on what we’re building, and a telescope focused on the future. We have an opportunity with this lunation to connect with our future goals, to see what our future selves might do differently in life. As you move through the ritual, consider what affirmations future YOU might believe whole-heartedly that current YOU struggles to accept and trust. In this moment, Saturn is asking us to connect the energy of newness with the energy of longevity. The choices you make today impact your future, and that’s a gift of a reminder that we have with this new moon.

The final aspect I want to touch on is the square to Chiron. Also 3° away, Chiron presents us with tension in how we navigate our wounds. Worries related to the house that holds Aries may be stirred up by this lunation, but what arises comes with an opportunity. Chiron reminds us that our wounds do not ever heal but they can be softened, tended to, like a sore bone that was once broken and still flares with the cold, this aspect asks that we approach our hurts and our scars with love and with care, that we believe we can have what we desire, the future we crave even with our fears and our memories.

Journaling Prompts

  • If I were to take counter-comfortable actions in one area of my life, where would I invite revolution?

  • What unexpected actions can I take today to shake off fear?

  • In what ways do I wish to be more rebellious?

The Ritual

Supplies Needed

  • An orange candle of any size

  • Any or all of the following: Dried rosemary, pink salt or thick sea salt, cinnamon (ground or stick broken into chips), calendula or yellow flower petals, star anise, bits of ground coffee, dried orange peels, and a bay leaf or 3. (I’ll give my IDEAL recommendations below in the steps but work with what you have and with what feels right).

  • A bit of a skin safe oil

  • Any oil related to confidence and empowerment, road opening, or block-breaking (Van Van is a good one of the standard oils). You can also use a little bit of blessed oil

  • Affirmations on paper which you’ll create below

  • A candle burning container

  • An empty jar

  • Mortar and Pestle (optional)

1️⃣ — Empowering the Self (Creating a shower scrub)

For this step, you will be creating a coffee skin scrub to utilize as an energizing and empowering tool in the shower prior to beginning the spell and meditation. I enjoy working with showers and baths as a way to prepare the energetic and physical body for a ritual. In doing this, we begin building our energy to be more in line with what we need for the ritual.

This scrub will be coffee based. As I mentioned above, utilize the tools you have but I will provide my intuitive and ideal recipe below. I will be using a mortar and pestle for this but your welcome to use a coffee grinder, a bowl and your hands, or whatever works for you. The key is to do your best to make everything ground and mixed to a coarse powder.

  • In a mortar and pestle or bowl, combine about 4-8 tablespoons of coffee grinds. Used grinds are totally fine! The more you create the more you’ll have to use but you can always make it fresh when needed.

  • Add about a teaspoon of dried cinnamon or one broken up cinnamon stick (you’ll want the chips to be very small or avoid as they may scrape the skin if not broken up enough).

  • Then add a tablespoon of rosemary.

  • Next add dried orange peels

  • Finally, cut up 1 or 3 bay leaves.

  • Mix and grind as best as you can then move to the empty jar.

  • Once you’ve done this, add a few drops of a magical oil, and add about a teaspoon (or eyeball by adding little bits at a time) of a skin-safe oil. I’ll likely use coconut oil or jojoba oil.

Once you have this to a consistency that you prefer, add the lid and your scrub is all ready!

When you take a shower prior to your ritual, use this in the shower. Scrub your skin and your scalp (if you’d like and don’t mind the grimy feeling of the oil). As you do this, envisioning our fears and hesitancies washing away. Feel the energy of the coffee moving into your skin and revitalizing your spirit. You are now ready for the next step.

2️⃣ Connect and Channel (Journaling and Meditation)

Once you’ve finished your shower scrub, either that same day or the following day, set some time aside to sit in front of a mirror. Make sure that you cleanse your mirror with smoke, salt water, or vinegar prior and after use.

Set the scene how you’d like (music, incense, etc). When ready, sit with the mirror and yourself. Begin by focusing on your eyes, and allow your vision to go hazy and your mind to wander.

The meditation will involve focusing on a future you (consider whatever timeline feels most accessible to you). Five years in the future feels fitting at this time but do what feels ACCESSIBLE. Begin envisioning this ideal future you in the mirror, the YOU who is feeling what you most want to feel, moving in a way that feels in line with your dreams. Move towards that person in your mind’s eye with your eyes open or closed.

As you move towards this future you, look at the space where they’re at. Look at how they dress, how do they style their hair? What do you see on their face and in their heart? Ask this future you what they do in their day. Ask this future you, where they began to make bold choices? Ask future you what you most need to know as present YOU.

Sit with this version of yourself as long as you’d like. When you’re ready to return, thank future YOU and ask for any guidance you need. Then envisioning yourself pulling back from the mirror back to your body where present YOU is situated.

Journal about your experience if you’d like.

3️⃣ Affirmation Journaling

I want you to consider what choices future you made to get to where you are at that point in your future.

As you consider this, ask yourself what choices and actions you most want to make but fear following through on. Use these responses, and the responses from the above journaling prompts, to guide you in creating affirmations.

Here are some examples:

  1. I want to move out and move to a new state. I fear doing this because I worry I’ll regret it.

    1. Affirmation: I embrace risks as a part of my learning journey.

    2. Affirmation: Regret does not exist when each choice moves towards a future I desire.

  2. I want to go back to college but I worry the debt isn’t worth it.

    1. Affirmation: My learning journey is worth pursuing.

    2. Affirmation: I embrace the pull of my soul and allow myself to navigate worries with belief instead of fear.

Hopefully the above can help you as you create your personal affirmations.

4️⃣ Spell for Confidence

Given that this ritual is all about stepping into a version of you that moves in new and rebellious ways, I thought a spell for confidence would be ideal.

Supplies specifically for the spell

  • Orange candle and candle burning container

  • Any of the following: Dried rosemary, pink salt or thick sea salt, cinnamon (ground or stick broken into chips), calendular or yellow flower petals, star anise, bits of ground coffee.

  • Blessed oil or magical oil

The Steps

  1. Begin by cleansing your supplies in whatever method works best for you. Once they are cleansed, gather your candle burning container - I feel a plate would be best for this set up.

  2. Surrounding where you will place your candle, add a circle of salt and coffee grinds. Sprinkle a few star anise if you have them.

  3. Write your affirmations on a piece of paper and fold it towards you however many times you need to to place it beneath the plate or the candle.

  4. Take your candle and carve your name as well as a few words that you feel called to related to confidence. (Confidence, courage, bravery, trust, etc).

  5. Add a bit of oil to the candle.

  6. Add a bit of dried rosemary, some yellow flower petals, and a bit of cinnamon.

  7. Call in your spirit team, your protectors, and your guides. Ask for their guidance in stepping into future you. Light the candle and make your wish 🙂

  8. When the candle is done burning, you can also burn your affirmations as a wish or place them somewhere where you will see them frequently.

5️⃣ Finally, Counter Action: Move in a new way

As you move forward in life following this new moon, I encourage you to pause before making choices - both small and big. Isntead of following the choice that feels comfortable and routine, try adding in some newness.

Try making choices that feel counter to who you currently are. Instead of re-recording a reel, put it up as is. Instead of saying “no” to an opportunity you don’t feel ready for but are excited by, consider if future you might say “yes.”

The key is to begin making choices that are WAY different than the choices you’ve already been making.

That’s all folks!
